The Mission

My mission started way before the rescue came along. It all started with taking home the class pet rats in elementary school. I found a strong connection to these very mis-understood creatures. It wasn’t until my early teens when I finally rescued two boys of my own. Ghost & Grimm.  However, they were just the start. Right after that I was contacted by someone who asked me if I could take their rat. And I said yes of course! (Even if it was against my parents wishes.!) She was one of the worst abused and neglected rats I’ve ever seen up to this day

That day something changed and me and I decided I would do whatever it was I could do to help these little lives, rescue as many as I could reasonably hide in my room!!

Teachers, students and friends all found my obsession with these little rodents so odd. And they didn’t understand. Which in their defense. They knew nothing about them! Only what Hollywood had portrayed them as!

I spent all my time learning as much as I could about rats as I could. I fell into even the nutritional care of animals which ultimately helped me find my career passion as well In life.

As I furthered my education (only so much to learn at the time!) I had more time to educate others on rats. I even convinced my gifted & talented teachers & class to adopt some class pets of our own!

Then, Word got out that I took in rats, and it snow-balled from there.

I started off as a Private Rehab or Retirement home for female rats, but as surrenders became more frequent I decided on opening up as a rescue.

I officially opened Smol Beans in July 2017 and have been open ever since!

Since then, I have expanded to all rats and just about any other small Animal. Any Gender, Any Age, Any Health Issues. We have even rescued & successfully adopted out over 1000 Animals since 2017! This includes other small Animals (Hamsters, Gerbils, Mice.. You name it!) Reptiles, Amphibians and even a few cats!
